I started this blog in 2011 as I began 3 months of a very low calorie diet (or VLCD in dieting shorthand.) While I lost 60 pounds doing it, I decided to remove those posts and start fresh with the blog.

Losing that much weight that quickly and in that manner was a double-edged sword. I got myself to a healthier weight, but the program I followed did not include enough of a mental component. I knew a lot of my bad eating habits were a result of trying to cope with stress, and the program I was on did me a disservice by minimizing that element. The maintenance plan wasn’t specific enough for me either. So while I lost all that weight, I didn’t do a fabulous job of keeping it off.

And then my hair started falling out. For 8 months after the diet, I was losing a scary amount of hair. I’m happy to report that my hair stopped falling, has started growing back in, and I’m no longer considering a new wardrobe of cute hats and wigs. After talking to a different nutritionist almost a year after I started the VLCD, she told me that losing that much weight was a shock to the system, and it’s not surprising that my body didn’t maintain all of that weight loss. My body was searching for equilibrium again.

One very positive thing about my weight loss is that it gave me the courage to try running. In February 2012, I started a 5K training program, running 30 seconds and walking 2 minutes. I have definitely become hooked on running, and that has spurred my interest in other forms of fitness as well.

As I head into 2013, I am excited about the opportunities in my life to keep me on a healthy path. I will have gained a little weight from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012, but I think I’m healthier than I have ever been. And it can only get better!
